Don John heartily agrees to anything that will make mischief for his enemies. Don Pedro and his entourage arrive masked and there is high-spirited dancing. As the dancing concludes, Don John, who has been waiting for his moment, approaches Claudio, pretending to recognize him as Benedick. Claudio, seeing this, will think that Hero is being disloyal to him with Borachio. Of course, after this Claudio would never marry her!
But, this is a comedy after all, so before that happens, Don Pedro, Leonato, and Claudio find Benedick alone, extolling the virtues of his imaginary-perfect-wife. They take the opportunity to talk where Benedick cannot help but overhear them.
Why it must be requited! Hero sends a messenger to tell Beatrice that Hero is talking about her behind her back, and, of course, Beatrice comes to listen in on the conversation.
I never yet saw a man, how wise, how noble but she would spell him backward. So now, both Beatrice and Benedick have fallen for the trap — both think the other is in love with them and vow to return that love in kind.
She makes fun of him, but offers to bring Beatrice to him. When Beatrice arrives, she is glad to hear that Benedick challenged Claudio, but remains sad for Hero. Leonato and the Friar tell Beatrice, Hero and some serving women to disguise themselves for the wedding.
They plan to wed Hero to Claudio, disguising her to ensure that he keeps his promise of marrying the mystery niece. Benedick tells Leonato that he hopes to marry Beatrice. At the wedding, Hero reveals herself, saying she has come back from the dead, and is reunited with Claudio. Beatrice and Benedick also, after some confusion, agree to be married. They plan a dance to celebrate, and a messenger brings news that Don John has been arrested for his crimes.

On stage, do you think he would act violently towards Hero? It is possible that Claudio might act violently towards Hero. It would make powerful and disturbing viewing. Perhaps his anger is more restrained. What do you think? At what point does the rest of the wedding party realise that Claudio is not going to marry Hero?
The audience knows from the beginning what is going to happen, but the rest of the wedding party are blissfully unaware, which is what creates the tension and suspense in this scene.
